Detailed Description:

‘Erdon Lee’ has gained international reputation for producing the largest lychees available, with fruit that can be more than twice the size of standard varieties. The fruit skin is bright red, enclosing juicy, translucent-white flesh with a refreshing sweetness and subtle floral aroma. Its small seed-to-flesh ratio enhances its eating quality, making it a favourite for fresh consumption. The tree itself forms a dense, dome-shaped canopy, adding ornamental appeal alongside productivity.

This cultivar is self-pollinating and capable of producing heavy crops once established, typically ripening from mid-summer to late summer depending on the region. It is best planted in a sunny, sheltered position in well-drained soils. While watering is essential during establishment and fruiting, fertiliser must never be applied, as lychees are highly sensitive and can be damaged by added nutrients.

Growth and Maintenance:

  • Watering: Water daily in the first week after planting; then keep consistently moist, particularly in hot, dry spells and during fruiting
  • Fertilising: Do not fertilise – lychee trees are highly sensitive and should never be given fertiliser
  • Mulching: Maintain a deep mulch layer around the root zone to retain soil moisture and protect feeder roots; keep mulch clear of the trunk

Pruning:

  • Formative: Light shaping when young encourages a balanced, rounded canopy
  • After Harvest: Remove any congested growth and dead wood to improve airflow
  • Size Control: Can be pruned to 2–4 m for easier harvesting in home gardens

Common Uses:

  • Backyard fruit tree for premium, large lychees
  • Feature fruit tree in warm-climate gardens
  • Commercial cultivation for high-value fresh markets
  • Shade and ornamental canopy with seasonal fruiting interest

Planting Benefits:

  • Huge Fruit Size: Largest lychee cultivar, producing fruit up to 120 g
  • Self-Pollinating: Only one tree required for fruiting
  • Premium Quality: Sweet, juicy flesh with superior flavour
  • Heavy Yields: Reliable crops once established in suitable climates
