Detailed Description:
The Broad-leaved Lilly Pilly is a stately and adaptable rainforest tree, native to Australia’s east coast. While it can reach up to 35 meters in its natural environment, in cultivation it typically grows between 8 and 10 meters, forming a dense canopy of broad, dark green foliage. It is particularly suited for use in gardens, parks, and urban streetscapes where its shade and structure are appreciated.

Between October and January, this tree produces clusters of small, aromatic creamy-white flowers that attract pollinators and fill the garden with fragrance. From May to August, these blooms give way to round white berries that are highly attractive to birds and other fruit-eating wildlife, supporting biodiversity in any setting.

The Broad-leaved Lilly Pilly is well suited to a range of conditions. It grows best in moist, well-drained soil and thrives in full sun to partial shade. With good tolerance to coastal winds and mild drought once established, it's an ideal choice for both inland and coastal planting.

Tree Form & Maintenance
To establish a strong and attractive tree form, train a central leader from a young age. Prune thick lateral branches back to 20–30 cm from the trunk up to 4 feet in height. Thin laterals (up to pencil thickness) can be removed entirely. Avoid cutting large branches flush with the trunk, as this increases the risk of disease. After 4 feet, lateral branches can be left to grow or pruned to 30–50 cm to encourage a balanced canopy. Continue to promote the central leader up to 6–8 feet before allowing it to branch more freely.

  • Suckers & Water Shoots: Remove any vigorous vertical shoots from the lower trunk every few months, as they can divert energy from the main structure. These are typically identified by their steep angle of growth.
  • Annual Pruning: Light shaping once or twice a year will help maintain symmetry and size. It can also be pruned regularly to form a dense, attractive hedge or screen.

Growth and Maintenance

  • Watering: Water 1–2 times per week for the first few weeks after planting. After establishment, water only during extended dry spells.
  • Fertilizing: Use an all-purpose or native fertilizer depending on tree maturity.
  • Soil & Positioning: Plant in full sun to part shade with access to moist, free-draining soil.

Common Uses

  • Street and shade tree: Widely used for its dense foliage and minimal maintenance
  • Windbreak: Forms an effective natural barrier against wind in exposed areas
  • Feature tree: Lush foliage, fragrant flowers, and white berries provide year-round interest
  • Hedging: Can be pruned into a large, formal or informal hedge
  • Coastal landscapes: Performs well in salt-laden winds and sandy soils

Planting Benefits

  • Wildlife Attraction: Flowers and fruit provide nectar and food for birds and pollinators
  • Visual Appeal: Shiny green foliage, seasonal flowers, and berries enhance any garden setting
  • Low Maintenance: Easy to care for once established, with minimal pruning needed
  • Versatility: Suited to a wide range of landscaping roles including hedging, screening, and specimen planting

The Broad-leaved Lilly Pilly is a resilient and beautiful native tree that brings structure, shade, and seasonal interest to the landscape. Its adaptability and visual appeal make it a favourite for both residential gardens and council plantings across Australia’s east coast.
